I just installed Dreamweaver MX 2004 on a clean install of 32 bit Windows 7 with SP1 and 100 Hot Fixes current to today. I installed it, opened an HTML file, and it showed up correct in both Code and Design views. I didn't do any real work with it, but I'm encouraged. The only problem was activation. Although I have used newer versions of Dreamweaver that are subscription based, I have canceled that service and for a long established client, used the software I had long ago created the site with. That was Dreamweaver MX 2004. I have never had any issues UNTIL roughly two weeks ago. I can no longer upload files to the server.

The only problem was activation. I typed a good serial number, it passed the client side serial number validity check, but it failed to authenticate. It said make sure my firewall allows SSL, so I opened a page at my bank and sure enough SSL was working. Then I tried activating by phone, but both the 800 and the 415 phone numbers have been disconnected.

It turns out Adobe deactivated some old Macromedia resources. My thanks to them for posting http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/macromedia-legacy-activation-error.html, which gives new serial numbers for a list of old Macromedia products including Dreamweaver MX 2004.

Just in case that page goes away, the new serial number for Dreamweaver MX 2004 Mac or Windows according to that Adobe web page is DWD700-56626-60325-58074. I changed my serial number to that and authenticated.
